AMD progress with Istanbul CPUs

Together with the announcement of the new Shanghai server processors, AMD shed some light on their upcoming six-core server processors codenamed Istanbul.

AMD isn’t relying on sheer number of cores, as they’re adding power management technologies and certain improvements to increase performance. Unlike the announced Shanghais, where the company hopes for similar performance at lower consumption, the aim with Istanbul CPUs is to increase performance at same consumption.

AMD’s product marketing director in server and workstation division, Margaret Lewis said that the Istanbul chips are based on Shangai cores, together with the same energy efficient parts and additional cache, and that the improvements AMD’s got in store should help the chip in handling heavier processing loads.

AMD’s Istanbul server processors are scheduled for 2H 2009, and big names such as Dell and HP are already on the list of customers.

Taking the spotlight for a bit, following Intel’s 32nm showcase, AMD has given a glimpse at what its upcoming six-core Opteron processors (codename Istanbul). As reported by… The Tech Report, the server CPUs were shown off in three systems – two quad-socket and one dual-socket, running everything from Windows Server 2008 to Server 2008 plus three virtual machines with Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Linux and SLES 11 x64 installed.

Manufactured using the 45nm process technology, the six-core CPUs are compatible with current Socket F motherboards making the upgrade simple and easy, have dual-channel DDR2 memory controllers, HyperTransport 3.0 and 6MB of L3 cache. The Istanbul Opterons are expected to make their debut in the second half of this year and will be followed in 2010 by the DDR3-supporting Sao Paolo models.
