AMD Phenom X4 955 3.2GHz in Q2 2010

You may not like the fact that Phenom II X4 965 has TDP of 140W, AMD plans to launch Phenom II X4 965 with a 125W TDP and 3.4GHz frequency that will make many people happy.

This is not all as the latest roadmap just got one more member. AMD plans Phenom II X4 955 with 3.2GHz in 95W. This is a great success as the current X4 955 has 125W TDP. The 95W Phenom II X4 955 will appear in Q2 2010 as AMD plans to bring a new, better revision of Deneb core out. This new Deneb revision should keep the existing TDPs down and this is the same core that will find its way to quad-core notebooks.

Overclocking AMD PhenomTM II Processors to the Limit

Overclocking AMD PhenomTM II Processors to the Limit

PC speed-freaks from across Europe will be pushing their processors to the limit in a series of extreme overclocking trials over the next month. The trials, which have been organised by AMD (NYSE:AMD), will see forum users from 19 leading technology forums from across the continent compete in a series of pedal-to-the-metal contests where they will attempt to push AMD platform technology, codenamed “Dragon,” to the fastest speed possible. During the trials, the contestants will try to clock up the highest scores in categories such as 3D Mark performance, calculation speed and highest CPU clock speed.(i)

The first of these events was held in London on Thursday 23rd April 2009, where sparks flew, literally! In this special event, eight teams of daredevil journalists went head to head in an attempt to break through the sonic wall in 3D Mark05 and CPU clock speeds. Things got so fast and so furious that sparks actually flew from one of the team’s “Dragon” rigs!(i)

It was a closely fought battle, but two winners emerged victorious. Clive Webster from Custom PC won the 3D Mark05 competition with a score of 24,689, while Tim Smally & Rich Swinburne from Bit-Tech won the CPU clock frequency competition with a speed of 4,211MHz. For this special opening event, both winning teams won a prize of $1000 each. The Custom PC donated their winnings to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and the Bit-Tech team gave their winnings to the Myton Hamlet Hospice.

Intel quad and dual-core LGA775 processor cut prices

Intel quad and dual-core LGA775 processor cut prices

Semiconductor old timer Intel has this week lower the price tags of a number of Core 2 Quad/Duo, Pentium Dual-Core, and Celeron processors, and the Xeon 3330. Between the upcoming release of the first LGA 1156 CPUs and AMD’s wave of AM3 parts, the cuts are set to make the LGA 775 line-up a bit more attractive, although we cannot go over the fact that the highest-clocked Core 2 Quads, the Q9550 and Q9650 have maintained their prices. Still, a price cut is always nice so see the table below for something you might like.

Intel Core i7 975 EE goes up for pre-order, pricing pretty high

Intel Core i7 975 EE goes up for pre-order, pricing pretty high

It must be fun having the fastest desktop processor going, as you earn the right to charge whatever premium you desire.

With competitors struggling to compete in the ultra high-end space, that’s where Intel often finds itself and its latest greatest – the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition – will arrive in stores next week with a wallet-busting price tag of around $1,130.

The chip, clocked at 3.33GHz and equipped with 8MB of L3 cache, features D0 stepping – a change that tends to suggest a refined silicon package that could result in lower power consumption and should provide greater overclocking headroom.

Although yet to be officially launched by Intel, the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition is expected to replace the existing Core i7 965 Extreme Edition and is being listed by a number of etailers – one of which suggests a U.S. launch on May 31st.

It’s mega expensive, sure, but then the fastest of them all always is. Those looking for something just a tad more palatable will note that Intel will also be introducing a second new Nehalem-based part, the Core i7 950. The not-so-extreme but still mighty quick chip will be clocked at 3.06GHz and includes 8MB of L3 cache – it’ll replace the Core i7 940, and could be yours for just $649.

Want to know just how quick the 975 Extreme Edition is before you place your order? Stay tuned for our forthcoming review.
