After the 32nm release wave last month, Intel is taking it down a notch in the coming quarters although but it is still planning some very interesting additions to its processor line-up. The first note-worthy newbie is the 2.80 GHz Core i7 930 (LGA 1366) which is set to debut on February 28 and cost $284 (the i7 920 will be phased out).On March 16 Intel will introduce the 3.33 GHz Core i7 980X 6-core processor (codename Gulftown) priced at $999, while in mid-May, the 3.6 GHz Core i5 680 dual-core will see the light of day, probably costing $284.In Q2 AMD will introducing its own 6-core processors (codename Thuban) which should go head-to-head, price wise, with Intel’s higher-end quads.

Intel’s has recently added four more processors to its list of soon-to-be-discontinued products, the 2.66 GHz Core 2 Quad Q9400 (boxed) and Q9400S, the 2.2 GHz Celeron E1500 (boxed) and 2.4 GHz Celeron 1600.The first to go are the boxed Q9400, Q9400S and E1600 which are set to be available for orders until April 9, 2010, and shipping till July 9, while the tray Q9400S will continue being delivered to customers until June 10, 2011.

The Intel Gulftown chip with its six cores, expected to be called the Core i9, isn’t even close to being ready for the market.Engeering samples have been leaking out into the hands of testers. We saw benchmarks of an early engineering sample of Gulftown, which impressed with its six cores.Gulftown engineering samples in the wild aren’t limited to just Taiwan, however, as Nordic Hardware reports that an even faster chip was sold on the OCTeamDenmark forums (Google cache version here) for around $850.

AMD has confirmed the rumors regarding its plans to release a six-core desktop processor in 2010. Codenamed ‘Thuban’, the upcoming AM3 processor will be made on 45nm technology, feature an integrated DDR3 memory controller and have 6MB of L3 cache.

The hexa-core Phenom is going to battle Intel’s Gulftown model which is slated to be introduced in Q2 next year. AMD has not provided a release time frame for Thuban but the rumors suggested the processor would debut in Q3 (2010).

AMD will lunch first DirectX 11-supporting cards and the interweb has shows some press shots of Sapphire’s Radeon HD 5800 series models. The HD 5870 and HD 5850 are based on AMD’s reference design and feature a 40nm RV870 GPU, a black PCB, a dual-slot cooler, a 256-bit memory interface, CrossFireX and ATI Eyefinity support, and dual DVI, HDMI, plus DisplayPort outputs.

Radeon HD 5870 boasts 1600 Stream Processors and GPU/memory clocks of 850/4800 MHz, while the HD 5850 includes 1440 SPs and frequencies of 750 MHz (GPU) and 4000 MHz (1GB GDDR5 memory)

While the Lynnfield Core i5 and i7s are the undisputed stars of this day it’s worth nothing that, in addition to them, Intel has added a few more processors to its product offer. For starters, we have the Core 2 Quad Q9505 and Q9505S which are priced at $213 and $277, respectively, have a stock clock of 2.83 GHz, a FSB of 1333 MHz, and 6MB of L2 cache. The difference in price comes from the CPUs’ TDP ratings – 95W for the Q9505 and 65W for the Q9505S.

Next up, there are the 65nm dual-core Celeron E3300 and E3200, which go for $53 and $43, respectively, work at 2.50 and 2.40 GHz, and boast a 800 MHz FSB and 1MB of L2 cache. Last but not least, on the mobile front the new releases are the ultra-low voltage Celeron M SU2300 and 743. The SU2300 is a dual-core processor clocked at 1.20 GHz, with a 800 MHz FSB, 1MB of L2 cache and a price tag of $134, while the 743 is a single-core CPU priced at $107 that has works at 1.3 GHz (and has the same FSB, L2 cache as the SU2300).

Lynnfield chips are not only for desktops as today Intel has rolled out six Xeon processors based on the new architecture. Paired up with the 3420 chipsets, the new Xeon 3400 family targets entry-level servers and includes processors that go from $189 to $589.

The highest clocked Xeon model released today is the 2.93 GHz X3470 which is pretty much a Core i7 870, while the CPU with the lowest frequency is the L3426.
