Overclocking Trials Push AMD PhenomTM II Processors to the Limit

June 28th, 2009

PC speed-freaks from across Europe will be pushing their processors to the limit in a series of extreme overclocking trials over the next month. The trials, which have been organised by AMD (NYSE:AMD), will see forum users from 19 leading technology forums from across the continent compete in a series of pedal-to-the-metal contests where they will attempt to push AMD platform technology, codenamed “Dragon,” to the fastest speed possible. During the trials, the contestants will try to clock up the highest scores in categories such as 3D Mark performance, calculation speed and highest CPU clock speed.(i)

The first of these events was held in London on Thursday 23rd April 2009, where sparks flew, literally! In this special event, eight teams of daredevil journalists went head to head in an attempt to break through the sonic wall in 3D Mark05 and CPU clock speeds. Things got so fast and so furious that sparks actually flew from one of the team’s “Dragon” rigs!(i)

It was a closely fought battle, but two winners emerged victorious. Clive Webster from Custom PC won the 3D Mark05 competition with a score of 24,689, while Tim Smally & Rich Swinburne from Bit-Tech won the CPU clock frequency competition with a speed of 4,211MHz. For this special opening event, both winning teams won a prize of $1000 each. The Custom PC donated their winnings to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and the Bit-Tech team gave their winnings to the Myton Hamlet Hospice.

Intel Core i7 975 EE goes up for pre-order, pricing pretty high

Intel Core i7 975 EE goes up for pre-order, pricing pretty high

It must be fun having the fastest desktop processor going, as you earn the right to charge whatever premium you desire.

With competitors struggling to compete in the ultra high-end space, that’s where Intel often finds itself and its latest greatest - the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition - will arrive in stores next week with a wallet-busting price tag of around $1,130.

The chip, clocked at 3.33GHz and equipped with 8MB of L3 cache, features D0 stepping - a change that tends to suggest a refined silicon package that could result in lower power consumption and should provide greater overclocking headroom.

Although yet to be officially launched by Intel, the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition is expected to replace the existing Core i7 965 Extreme Edition and is being listed by a number of etailers - one of which suggests a U.S. launch on May 31st.

It’s mega expensive, sure, but then the fastest of them all always is. Those looking for something just a tad more palatable will note that Intel will also be introducing a second new Nehalem-based part, the Core i7 950. The not-so-extreme but still mighty quick chip will be clocked at 3.06GHz and includes 8MB of L3 cache - it’ll replace the Core i7 940, and could be yours for just $649.

Want to know just how quick the 975 Extreme Edition is before you place your order? Stay tuned for our forthcoming review.

Dual-core Phenom, Calisto is coming in June

May 18th, 2009

3.0GHz and 3.1GHz

Phenom II X2 550 will be the 3.1GHz dual core Phenom II. This is a harvested version of Deneb quad-core, that will have two cores disabled and we’ve learned that it should launch in June, and Computex might be a good time.

This dual-core can achieve very high performance as it will have 7MB of total cache or 2×512KB L2 and massive 6MB of L3 and this one should give Intel’s Core 2 series a big headache especially with its price / performance ratio.
Phenom II X2 550 clocked at 3.1GHz and Phenom II X2 545 clocked at 3.0GHz have the same TDP of 80W. With AMD’s current pricing, we would not be surprised to see these CPUs priced around the €100 mark.

Fastest Clarkdale 32nm to go over 3GHz

May 7th, 2009

Intel plans to introduce at least six different versions of Clarkdale CPUs and this 32nm Westmere generation CPU with Multi chip package 45nm graphics should work at speeds over 3GHz.

Intel plans that Clarkdale should replace the 3.33GHz clocked Core 2 Duo E8600 and in order to successfully replace a CPU you have to be the faster of two. We expect that top Clarkdale might run at 3.33GHz if not even at 3.5GHz or higher, as clock to clock Westmere 32nm CPU should be a bit faster than Penryn 45nm based Core 2 Duo.

There will still be plenty of users who will want to upgrade its current dual-core with a new dual-core as you still get very limited performance increase with quad-cores, and at the same time quad cores are hotter.

You can expect that European price of first dual core Clarkdale 32nm with an integrated IGP should land at €249.99 or close to $250 in the USA.
